The Name Game
Mom, Mommy, Mother…
My title is one that is overused, trite, lacking originality, worn-out, and commonplace. Sometimes I get tired of hearing the word “Mom” or “Mommy”. I definitely question when the title, “Mother” is used.
However, it is my destiny, my trial, and my pleasure to carry that title, because I have children. Lots of them, actually. I am not alone in carrying this title, many women do. It can get confusing at times (the grocery store, the park, etc.) where large groups are gathered.
The following is a list of some of the great, ordinary, and not so great comments I hear on an almost daily basis. Feel free to add some of your own favorites in the comment box.
“Mommy, can I watch a movie? No, not that one, this one!”
“Mom, can we go to the park?”
“Can I have some milk, Mom?”
“Mom, I need to use the computer. Where’s the keyboard?”
“Mom, the baby really needs a bath.”
“Mommy, are we going to Legoland today? How ’bout tomorrow?”
“Mom, when are we going to Grandma’s? Grandpa’s?”
“Will you please read me a story tonight? You promised, Mom.”
“Mom, you said you would do it!”
“But, Mommy, he wanted me to read a story to him.”
“Mom, I need a cowboy hat for Girl Scouts.”
“But I set the table last night, Mom!”
“I love you, Mommy.”
“Thank you, Mom.”
“Thanks for tucking me in, Mommy.”
“Hey, Mom, you were right. I did like it.”
“Okay, Mommy, you’re right. Goodnight.”
I particularly love those last two comments. It thrills me when my children acknowledge that I may actually know something - that college education is paying off! I really need to start recording those statements, because I am learning through experience that those types of comments are few and far between during the teen years. I am going to miss them. Luckily I still have two toddlers to train.

“I’ve changed my name. When you guess it correctly I will get you another glass of water!” Or whatever else it is that is required. OK so I don’t say it, but there are times when I sure do think it. Along with “Your pappa isn’t really glued to his chair! Ask him!”
I don’t have any kids of my own, but I’m hoping to someday.

I don’t have any kids, but I heard this a lot from various kids around their moms, “But Moooooommmmmmm, you promised!!!”
