Latex Links?

Published by jen at 7:57 pm under Posts Edit This

One Step Closer

After blogging about my ice allergy, I once again searched the internet for more information to try to find a connection between it and fibromyalgia. I got a little more intense than usual and also searched for information on fibromyalgia and latex allergies.

My latex allergy is extreme and affects most areas of my life, even down to the candy I eat! I only eat paper or foil wrapped chocolate bars.

Imagine my surprise when I came across a group of people who understand what I’ve been living with - because they experience it, too. As I’ve started to receive responses from people who understand my fear of balloons, my worry about eating restaurant and packaged food because of possible latex exposure, my fear of going to the hospital more than whatever illness I may have, I felt suddenly relieved. I’m not the only one!

Maybe some of you have experienced this in other areas of your life. This has been life changing for me. My latex allergy has been an issue in my life since 1990 and has gotten worse with each exposure.

If fibromyalgia is somehow linked to this allergy, I am going to do my best to discover it. One doctor told me, “At least you know what you’ll die from” in reference to my latex allergy. We were talking about the dangers of car accidents for me - Would my med-alert bracelet be noticed? Would appropriate gloves, if any, be on hand?  My local hospital couldn’t find them after 4 hours of searching last time and so sent me home.  Or would I die on the side of the road while they considered all scenarios on how to treat me?

It’s not a good thing to think about.  So, usually, I don’t.  But today I want answers and I feel like I’m one step closer to getting them. Wish me knowledge and enlighten me, if you have information to help my quest.  Thanks!

Wow, very interesting. I don’t know much about this, I do remember that I had a mole removed once and the wound itself bothered me less then the band-aid that was on it. I didn’t realize till the next day how much it bothered me until I saw how red and sore I was getting. I guess I’m allergic to them, but I couldn’t imagine having to worry about them killing me. I am so sorry that you have to go through this.

Thanks, Violetteb. You should probably let your doctors know about your reaction and try to avoid latex contact from now on. In fact, latex-free bandages are becoming standard issue most places. A latex allergy is serious business and can get worse with each exposure, so take care.

I am allergic to most antibiotics on the market, and I’m allergic to the benadryl that they give you in the hospital for the allergic reaction. My last bout of anaphalyatic shock lasted a week in the hospital because of this fact. My med alert bracelet is a godsend for this.

Have you thought of caring one or two pairs of non latex gloves with you in your purse or car as a just in case with a card in your wallet that announces this??

Yes, Tina, I carry gloves. Thanks for asking. In an “accident” who knows if they would be found, though. I wear a med-alert bracelet, carry an Epi-pen, a cell phone, and medication, as well. Whenever I go anywhere I have to mention my allergy to people with me so that they can take action if need be. As one who has intense allergies, I know you get it. Allergic to Benadryl - eek!
