Changing The World

International Fibromyalgia Awareness Day

Today is a special day for those who struggle with fibromyalgia, affectionately referred to as “Fibromites”. It’s a day of awareness.  The date of May 12th was chosen because it was the birthday of Florence Nightingale, the Crimean War nurse called The Lady of The Lamp, who brought organization and change to science, sanitation and nursing.

Her work is thought to have been the precursor to our modern day Red Cross. Florence Nightingale suffered from immune-related issues during the last 50 years of her life, and is thought to have had fibromyalgia. Despite this, she founded the first School of Nursing.

What a woman - what an inspiration! She had an iron will and the drive to continue on despite her own discomfort and pain. She wanted to change the world.  And she did!  Maybe someday I will change the world; but today I think I’ll focus on making sure the laundry is clean, dinner is made, and that my kids make it to school on time, with homework completed, and say their prayers.
