Feeding My Family
Simplify the Basics
By evaluating my routines, I have found ways to make my life easier, even with fibromyalgia. Maybe some of these simple suggestions will have a place in your life as well. I began with listing our life essentials and then broke down each task into manageable steps.
Feeding My Family of 10
My family loves to eat. Keeping food in the house can be a huge challenge, both logistically and financially. We eat a lot of fresh produce so we bought a large commercial refrigerator (no freezer*) for our small galley-style kitchen.
I purchase our produce (whatever’s on sale + bananas) on “double-ad Wednesdays” at Henry’s Market. Trader Joe’s is around the corner from our home, so I go there for other staples (grains, eggs, supplements, cheese, milk, frozen chicken) twice a month. If the deals are really good (check Green Stew or Coupon Mom), I have extra time and energy, and I have a stash of worthwhile coupons, I will visit Ralphs or Vons.
I devised a master meal plan based around our family‘s tastes and my schedule. I always make a huge pot of brown rice on Sundays to augment for quick meals throughout the week. On busy days or days where I’m not feeling well, I use my slow cooker so that dinner does not get forgotten. I also like to have frozen “one-pot” meals ready to go in case I am too tired at the end of the day to prepare a meal. My family likes the Fried Rice (3 packs seasoned with a little teriyaki or soy sauce) from Trader Joe’s. I always keep frozen cheese ravioli and veggies on hand so that I can boil a last minute meal, as well. I’ll post some easy, healthy recipes tomorrow!
* We do have a freezer in the garage.
